Want to try cross-country skiing? Want to renew some rusty skills? Never took a lesson and want to learn the techniques?
Each winter the ski club offers beginning cross country ski lessons. This winter, a classroom session will start us off on January 12th from 6:00 to-8:00 p.m. at the Lomas-Tramway Library. At this session we'll talk about gear, fitness, and preparedness for a day outdoors. Then, Saturday, 23 January we'll head to the Sandias for some on-the-snow lessons. Come join us. Lessons are free to members and Sport Systems rents classic cross-country gear.
If you aren't able to make this session, there are several other programs you may be able to attend:
Enchanted Forest Cross-country Ski Area, Red River, NM, offers lessons and ski rentals.

UNM Continuing Education, Albuquerque

UNM Los Alamos offers Nordic ski lessons at the Valles Caldera Preserve.

So go ahead and give it a try.
When the snowflakes fly we will also have intermediate practice sessions. These sessions are designed for members who want to practice turning and control on slopes. The bunny hill at Sandia Peak Ski area is a great place to practice. Turns include all levels, from snowplow to parallel and telemark turns. Skis, bindings and boots should be appropriate.
Barry Ritchey has offered once again to bring you into the telemark fold. Telemark skiing clinics are held Jan 10, 2016, at the Santa Fe ski resorts. Participants will need to buy a lift ticket. A San Juan back-country telemark weekend is also in the offing. Keep working on those free-heel skills, folks!
We're arranging an American Institute of Avalanche Research and Eduction (AIARE) Level 1 class for club members. The course requires 24 hours of instruction. If you are interested, please contact Susan Russo, tele4fun@gmail.com, or Rob Suminbsy, robert.suminsby@gmail.com, as soon as possible. Indoor portion will be held in Albuquerque and outdoor session at Taos Ski Valley. This is a great class for those who go on or want to go on hut trips or back-country day tours in Colorado. You may be crossing avalanche terrain and not be aware of it. If you've taken a class in years past, consider updating your knowledge as emphasis in courses has changed with recent research.
If you have instruction-related questions, please contact Susan Russo at tele4fun@gmail.com.
