Jan 13 – 16, 2017, Leadville Bus Trip

Columbine Inn

The first bus trip of the 2017 ski season will be to Leadville, CO, where we will stay in the Columbine Inn. The Columbine has the usual amenities available, including complimentary breakfast and high speed internet. You also can enjoy the town's many amenities and nightlife.

Leadville, CO

Leadville is the home of the legendary Molly Brown. The town of Leadville also has many ski routes including a route that circles the town, which is an easy route that can be done when there is sufficient snow.

Skiing is available at a number of sites, including the Turquoise Lake area, Tennessee Pass, and many trails around the Cooper Mountain Ski Area. Ski Cooper is one of the oldest resorts in the US. Turquoise Lake has lots of Class 1 skiing, where you can go about as far as you want on trails with relatively little altitude change. If the weather has been cold you can ski on the lake, where there is no altitude change at all. Some of these routes can be extended to locations like the Skinner Hut and Uncle Bud's Hut, both part of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. More information about the lake area is available at Leadville Twin Lakes.

Tennessee Pass offers Class 1 and 2 routes that go to the Continental Divide Hut, also part of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. If you go a little further up US 24 you can find plenty of class 2 and 3 routes that go to Vance's Cabin and many areas in that vicinity.

Tennessee Pass Nordic Center Warming Hut

Great skiing is also available at Cooper Mountain. If you like downhill, you can try Ski Cooper. But for cross country, you can try some of the trails in the vicinity of the downhill area, including the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center, with 27 km of set track and groomed trails. One of the favorite trips at Cooper Mountain is the Cooper Loop, a trail that circumnavigates Cooper Mountain, ending up passing through the north trail of the Nordic Center to return to the Ski Cooper parking lot. This has been one of our challenge trails at Cooper Mountain, so we might look forward to another visit this year. There is also great class 3 skiing on routes that tale up as high as Chicago Ridge.

Cost for the Leadville Bus Trip will be $285 plus your food and incidentals. The dates will be Jan 13 - 16, 2017, MLK weekend.  Signups will start with the club meeting on Oct 13.
